DISEC

(Disarmament and International Security Committee)

Agenda Item: Countering the Illicit Trade and Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW)

Topic: Countering the Illicit Trade and Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW)

The DISEC committee addresses the pervasive issue of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) proliferation, which destabilizes regions, fuels conflicts, and enables organized crime and terrorism. Though individually small, the sheer volume and accessibility of these weapons cause catastrophic human cost globally. Delegates will work to strengthen the implementation of existing international instruments, such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). Key debates will focus on enhancing national marking and tracing capabilities to track illicit arms flows, securing vulnerable state stockpiles to prevent diversion to the black market, and developing targeted disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs in post-conflict zones. The committee must seek consensus on how to curb the flow of these weapons across porous borders and dry up the sources of illicit trade financing.
